pulp.: Headshots for the journal, then work. Looked like very good progress was made today; back at it next week. (And remember: radio silence on all that goes on in class, please.)

Critical Reading: Reloaded: 

Family Values: Today we watched the debut episode of The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, from 1952.

We’ll talk more about it on Monday, but two main observations emerged:

1. This was the first sitcom in which the kids and their struggles really took center stage. (It happened in The Goldbergs from time to time, but the stars of this show were really the Nelson kids — a pattern that many future sitcoms would follow.)

2. More specifically, Ricky Nelson became the prototype for the adorable younger/est sibling, who steals every scene they’re in and gets most of the funny lines. We’ll see this same model used again very soon, with even greater success.

And how about those Hotpoint ads! More Monday on the suburbs, sitcom kids, the first “reality show” and the idea of TV as a window to the world.

Survey: CNF: Today we discussed the “moment model” and the “riff model” of creating an essay.

In the moment model, you begin with a moment — like the one you did for class today. Then you ask yourself some questions. Most important is, “Has this, or anything like it, ever happened to me before?” If so, you’re probably gonna use those moments as well.

You should also ask yourself what you learned from this moment; what you think it reveals (about you, about the world, etc.); what you’d like to share about it with others. All these questions should point you toward your riff(s).

In the riff model, you simply go about things the opposite way. You think first about what you want this essay to share, to reveal, to be about, in other words. Then you find a moment or moments that can illustrate your point.

We worked on this in class for a bit, and then I gave you a copy of the David Sedaris essay “The Youth In Asia” to read for Tuesday. You can expect a quiz before we do what we need to do with this one.
