Poetry Workshop:

Short Fiction Workshop: Today was a work day. There are no new stories (yet) for Monday, but don’t count on it just being another work day. Remember to stay on top of your work – for almost half of the class, this is the very last round of workshop ever (at least here at LP), so I urge you to do your part to make it awesome.

Long Form Fiction Workshop: Read up to the end of Part II of “A Long Way Down.” (Post comments to Blog.) Monday we will be workshopping Danielle and Kat. Please bring your annotations and post comments to the blog.

7/8 Lit Arts: For Monday you have a typed/finished version of one of the poems you wrote in class on Wednesday. Additionally you should also have 5 typed Haiku.

7th Grade:

Survey: Screenwriting: Today you got back your sequence assignment and we talked a bit about what can still be improved upon. Some of the broad strokes:
– Make sure that you’re using ALL CAPS to your advantage. It draws the eye and emphasizes, which helps move the reader down the page. Which is what you want to have happen.
– Break up that exposition. Remember, chunks should really be no longer than 4 – 5 lines long down the page. Many of you crunched it all together – it’s hard to read, and it throws the page/min ratio off. Use the white space on the page!
– Make sure that you use new scene headings whenever you move from one location to another. From inside to outside (or vice versa), it’s non-negotiable. In a larger space – like “INT. LIGHTHOUSE,” you might want to use multiple heading to break the space up: “INT. BOTTOM OF LIGHTHOUSE,” “INT. STAIRCASE,” “EXT. TOP OF LIGHTHOUSE,” etc. Also, know what secondary scene headings are and how to use them.
– VISUALS ARE IMPORTANT. Too many of these sequences had “white room” syndrome – it was hard if not impossible to see the scene. A good way to approach this is to use this order of operations: scene heading first, then brief description of setting, then focus in on the subject/character.
