November 24, 2014

CNF Workshop: Today: Fox (from Round 3) and the beginning of Round 4 (Doban, Kremm). For Wednesday: Andrasko.

Screenwriting Workshop: Today we workshopped Johnna. Kelly is due for Wednesday. Johnna and Ariana W. are due to post on Wednesday. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to go on the blog and read their work, even if you miss getting a hard copy. I will have hard copies available to you both on Wednesday and, obviously, on Tuesday when we get back. Plan ahead of time – Johnna’s screenplay is already on the blog and is 60 pages long (30 in addition to what we workshopped today). You have been warned.

Action Hero: SIREN stuff today. I gave back midterms. The finals will be due Friday, Jan. 9. More on this later; we’ll start Goldfinger when we return from break.

BatCat: Getting ready for I Made It! and Handmade.

7/8 Lit Arts: Today we took a quiz on “The Fall of the House of Usher” and talked about how:

1. its opening graf is one of the most famous in English lit, thanks to Poe’s scene-setting abilities, and the way the introduction to the house foreshadows what is to come.

2. the unusual relationship between Roderick and his sister has come to be associated with Poe’s own life.

3. the symbolism of the crack in the house, and the house itself, suggest the fractured mental states Poe excelled at describing.

We worked briefly on haiku; for Monday, Dec. 8:

1. Read “Some Words with a Mummy.” There will be a quiz.

2. Read “William Wilson” if you want a chance at some extra credit. (It’s optional.)

3. Be ready to meet with me briefly, if your last name is A-F. We’ll continue these individual meetings throughout the rest of the semester.

8th Grade:

Survey: Fiction: Today we did an activity in class – exquisite corpse. You are to use the resulting image to inspire (in some way – it need not be direct) your next short story assignment, which can be found here: Fiction 11.24.14 – Prompt 11 Short Story. It’s due Friday, Dec. 5.
