December 3, 2014

CNF Workshop: Today: Cianfarano and Andrasko. For Monday: comments and annotations for Johnson and Olszewski.

Screenwriting Workshop: Today we workshopped Ariana W. and Kelly. Johnna and Danielle T (the script without a cover page) are due to be workshopped on Monday. It might be good to also have Rosemary’s ready to go.

Action Hero: Began watching Goldfinger. We’ll continue Friday.

As you watch, keep in mind this Umberto Eco template I posted on the blog a week or two back:

A. M. . . gives a task to Bond.
B. Villain. . . appears to Bond (perhaps in vicarious forms).
C. Bond. . . gives a first check to Villain or Villain gives first check to Bond.
D. Woman . . . shows herself to Bond.
E. Bond takes Woman (possesses her or begins her seduction).
F. Villain captures Bond (with or without Woman, or at different moments).
G. Villain tortures Bond (with or without Woman).
H. Bond beats Villain (kills him, or kills his representative or helps at their killing).
I. Bond, convalescing, enjoys Woman, whom he then loses (From “Narrative Structures in Fleming,” p. 161).

BatCat: Saturday. Handmade Arcade. Let’s do it.

7/8 Lit Arts: Today Mr. Anderson was absent. I gave you an additional assignment for Monday, Dec. 8: writing a letter to Santa, in which you take out all the frustrations of your young lives. If you wanted it but didn’t get it, blame him. If you wanted it and DID get it (but it didn’t work), blame him. You have carte blanche (that’s essentially French for a “blank check”) here: the main requirement is that you provide me with imagery. I have to be able to see what it is you’re kvetching about.

The other standing assignments still apply:

1. Read “Some Words with a Mummy.” There will be a quiz.

2. Read “William Wilson” if you want a chance at some extra credit. (It’s optional.)

3. Be ready to meet with me briefly, if your last name is A-F. We’ll continue these individual meetings throughout the rest of the semester.

8th Grade: We watched the Twilight Zone episode “Night of the Meek” and talked about what it means to be meek. You gave me your definition, and then we talked about whether  being meek is a good thing or not, and whether (as it says in the Beatitudes) the meek really will — or should — inherit the earth.

Survey: Fiction: Today we made books, or at least tried to. 🙂
