February 4, 2016

Poetry Workshop: Silence. Blessed silence. We talked about it. Monday, you’ll write about it. Your first rotation poems are due on the blog by the end of the block Monday.

Fiction Workshop: Today we did another prompt (writing a piece of fiction in a specific document form – list, syllabus, obituary, play, etc) and looked at a few examples. The rest of the time was yours to work.

Cultural Literacy: I gave out the syllabus Cultural Literacy syllabus Spring 2016 and we began talking about geography. We identified 20 countries, in four different regions, that we will target:

The Americas:

  1. The United States
  2. Canada
  3. Mexico
  4. Chile
  5. Colombia

  1. The United Kingdom/Ireland
  2. France
  3. Germany
  4. Spain
  5. Greece

The Middle East:

  1. Syria
  2. Iraq
  3. Iran
  4. Afghanistan
  5. Israel

  1. Russia
  2. China
  3. India
  4. Japan
  5. North and South Korea

No assignment for Friday, but if you haven’t filled out the Book Signup Form Cultural Literacy Booki signup form Feb 1 2016, you’ll need to complete that Friday as well.

BatCat: The usual!

Survey: CNF: You wrote a moment about

  1. a time you discovered that adults can’t always be trusted, or
  2. a time when you confronted a fear

Then we created moment trees — essentially, chains of moments related in some way to our main moment. I went over a couple of them in class.

So far, besides the moment you wrote today, you have written moments about times when you experienced a “first,” and about a time when you discovered something important. You assignment for Monday is to create a moment tree for either the “first” moment, or the “discovering something important” moment. (You can do this on the back of your notecard, but I will be collecting them.)

I ALSO want to collect your moment trees from today. If you didn’t finish in class, do it and have it ready to turn in Monday.

Survey: Screenwriting: Today you filled out a response sheet for Some Like It Hot and then we talked about your responses for most of the class. You wrote down a couple of notes: three act structure and plot point. More on all this later.

There is a new homework assignment for next week: Screenwriting 2.3.16 – Assignment 2, More Spectacle. It’s basically the same as Assignment 1 (which was also returned to you today), but you need to do twice as many imagined images.
