November 7, 2016

CNF Workshop: Today: Kennedy and McKinzie. Wednesday: Kasper (held over from today) + reading quiz + 5th round essay due on the blog by 8 a.m. That is all.

Screenwriting Workshop: Today we workshopped Olivia and Alexa. Haley’s screenplay was handed out and is for next Monday; we are still waiting on Henry’s, but I suspect you will get it tomorrow or Wednesday.

Please be aware of your due dates! They are posted on this blog; just scroll down a couple of weeks.

On Wednesday, we will be doing an activity in class. Please be here. 🙂

Public Speaking: Today you turned in your speeches and practiced in small groups. I hope.

By Friday, I will need to see your speech transcribed onto no more than three (3) 4×6 notecards. Don’t try to write the whole thing on there. Use keywords, catchphrases, section headers, etc.

We will use next Monday as our final practice day. This Wednesday we will schedule the midterm speeches for next Wed. and Fri.

BatCat: Hopefully we will be staying after school on Thursday; please check your calendars and sign up on the board tomorrow. We’ll be doing paste papers – bring clothes that you don’t mind getting paint on.

Horror: Today we had one of the more entertaining discussions I think possible about Sigmund Freud’s theory of the id, the ego and the superego. I hate to use “For Dummies” links on you, but if you missed the discussion, this isn’t a bad way to catch up:

Everyone who was here has gotten the Lovecraft book, so I assigned three stories for next Monday: “The Hound,” “The Tomb,” and “The Music of Erich Zann.”

Survey: Fiction: Today some of you needed to finish your midterms. In class, you received Prompt 8 (fiction-11-7-16-prompt-8-character-monologue). This will be checked for completion TOMORROW (Tuesday), since our schedule this week is switched around a bit.

Also for TOMORROW: read Hills Like White Elephants from the Norton Anthology (pg. 335). There will be a quiz, as usual.

This doesn’t apply to everyone, but: if you are missing any major assignments (Assignment #2, the latest notebook check, or the character interrogation, which was checked for completion today), you are going to want to do these things and and them in ASAP. The department policy is officially 20% off per day, and some of you are certainly well past the window of opportunity, but please note that handing something in is ALWAYS better than not at all, and I will consider your work for points even after the fact, if the quality is high.

Middle School Literary Arts Enrichment: Took our first quiz on Poe. Heard renditions of “Annabel Lee” (by Basil Rathbone):

“The Conqueror Worm,” by Vincent Price:

And “The Raven,” by The Simpsons:

For next week: please read the Neil Gaiman introduction to Poe that I gave you, as well as “The Tell-Tale Heart.”
