January 21, 2017

Apologies for the late post, everyone. It was a hectic week to conclude the semester, but a lot got done. Here are the highlights from the past couple of days:

  • We had individual meetings with all but a handful of folks. If we didn’t get to you yet, we will do so on Monday.
  • We’re glad to get the chance to sit down with you all individually, even if it’s just for a few minutes. Hopefully you know this already, but there are no unimportant people in our department: each of you is someone we want very much to see succeed. So if we told you you’re doing something well, then keep doing it. If we challenged you to do something better, then accept that challenge. Our goal is a department where everyone reaches their potential while they’re still here — how great would that be? Pretty great. So do your bit to make that happen next semester.
  • The semester begins Monday with a departmental meeting (everyone but middle-schoolers) in Room 214, AH. Everyone should stay in AH when the first bell rings; we’ll read announcements, and then go up together.
  • At that departmental meeting, you will get your second semester schedules. You won’t have any questions about them, because you’ve already checked your schedule on PowerSchool and have already asked about any potential conflicts. Right? Right.
  • First and second block classes will be shorter Monday. However, we will still have workshops. And if you’re in Poetry Workshop, you have comments and annotations due for the first three poems in the packet I gave you: Hamilton, Bullock and Koscinski. Remember: I will collect all annotations downstairs during announcements. And no late anything accepted.
  • I plan to give back stuff during Blocks 2 and 3 Monday for Public Speaking and History of Horror, to close out those classes.
  • Plan on two LAVA rehearsals: during Block 2 on Thursday, Jan. 26, and during Block 2 on Thursday, Feb. 2 (the day of the show).
  • It’s early, but things move fast second semester. So very soon we’ll be talking about portfolios, the Writing Awards, and all that stuff. Start thinking ahead. “It’s better to look ahead and prepare than to look back and regret.”
  • Have a nice weekend, everyone, and we’ll see you next semester.
