March 27, 2017

Poetry Workshop: Today: Bullock (R4), and then began R5 with Bullock, Bocek and Erb-White.

For Wednesday: Duffy, Bett, Smith, Hamilton.

Speed round (Round six) guidelines:

  • On the blog by 8 a.m. Monday, April 3
  • Minimum of three lines; a maximum of eight
  • We’ll workshop these and vote for our favorite(s) next Wednesday and Friday. The winner wins the obligatory valuable prize.

Fiction Workshop: Today we workshopped Spencer and Joanie. You have two packets out: Hannah is for Wednesday, Victoria is for Friday. Please stay aware of your due dates for Round 3! Please see me if you have any issues.

Family Values: Test #2. I collected notebooks.

Then we watched what became the pilot of The Andy Griffith Show: his guest appearance in February 1960 on The Danny Thomas Show (the renamed Make Room for Daddy):

I gave you two handouts: one on the show, and one an essay called “Against the Organization Man.” Please have them read for Wednesday.

Comedy: We began by talking about the members of the “nuclear club,” which you can see in this handy infographic that tells when they all joined:

And here’s some more current information — you can also read more here:

Then we watched the (in)famous “Daisy” commercial, which helped Lyndon B. Johnson defeat Barry Goldwater in the 1964 presidential election. (It’s still one of the most famous political ads ever made.)

All of this was to provide some context for our next film, which we began today: Stanley Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb.

We’ll finish tomorrow. Remember: notebook checks and test Wednesday,

Middle School Lit Arts:

Survey: Screenwriting: Today you handed in your sequences, and at the end of class we read some of them aloud (good job so far!).

We discussed the project that we’ll be embarking on for most of the rest of the semester, which is to develop a feature-length story with a partner. In class, you filled out forms that expressed some preferences in terms of who you’ll be paired with. You’ll get your partners on Wednesday and the project will begin at that time.

A large reading packet was handed out – these will serve as the readings for the next month or so.

For Wednesday: read the first chapter of the reading packet! It’s about the first 18 pages or so. There will be a quiz.
